Bigay-Bawi

We gifted Baby Marco with this one last Sunday. I know that he's only one-year old but I am sure he'll be receiving a lot of "baby toys" (the Vtech ones) already so I thought of getting something that he could enjoy when he's a bit older. Mabilis lang naman kasi ang panahon. I have a 3-year old so I know what the birthday boy will like in the near future.

But I have a confession to make. I bought it the last minute na kasi hindi naman talaga yun ang plano kong iregalo.

Ito talaga:

So cute noh? I've been eyeing this trolley at the Disney Store since forever. Then one day, it went on sale. $19-off! Parang naging $35 na lang siya (plus tax). We were looking for a gift for Marco that time so I thought this would be perfect, especially since his party theme is Cars. Again, I wanted to give him something that he could use later on pa. As a mom, mas gusto ko kasi na pang-advanced age ang gifts eh, be it clothes or toys or any other things.

But just a few days before the party, I had a change of heart. Parang mas gusto ko ito for Nathan haha! I mean, he's older and can use this na by next year. There were only three stocks left when we bought it so I am sure wala ng ganito.

That's the thing pala when you have a son and you are buying for other boys, gusto mo meron din ang anak mo kaloka! Mahina talaga ang EQ ko.

High EQ

I would like my son to take after his father. Objectively, sa aming dalawa, he's the better person kasi. He's simple, generous, and kind. At ang taas ng EQ (emotional quotient) ha, which is my exact opposite.

I am glad that at a very early age, nakikitaan ko na rin si TanTan ng traits ng tatay niya. Parang mataas din ang EQ.

When we saw this newly-released Paw Patrol lookout toy last August, syempre gusto niya. Since then, whenever we would go to Walmart, Toys R Us or Superstore, talagang pupuntahan niya yan.

He just kept on saying, "Sa birthday." We were really impressed kasi talagang he was very willing to wait.

He was happy na naman just looking at the toy eh.

And good things come to those who wait! Here's our finale gift for the birthday boy!

Haha, imagine how excited he was when dad was assembling it! Nagtatatalon sa tuwa. Ford and I were so happy just seeing his reaction...

... never mind that we were asar-talo for the price that we paid for it. Waaah!

You see, the original price of this toy was $150 (plus 12% tax). After a few weeks, nakita namin na nag-sale ito sa Superstore ng $120 kaya binili na namin. So happy na kami. Kaso after a month, nag-sale din ito sa Walmart ng $90! Kainis talaga! Oh well, lesson learned. Kagaya nga ng nasabi ko on this post, we just need TO WAIT first before buying toys (or kahit ano) kasi tiyak magse-sale. Taasan ang EQ haha!

*************

For Christmas, ito namang Fisher Price na barnyard set "main" request niya. Haha, matagal na namin itong nabili and we couldn't wait to give it to him!

Hay, sana anak ma-maintain mo yang ganyang attitude. Sana high EQ palagi ha. =)

Best Black Friday Deal

Nathan and I are going 'home' in the Philippines this January and I was searching for a perfect gift for my nephew who I haven't seen (except in FB and IG) in more than five years. He'll turn 7 na in April 2018. I know that he's into toy cars / trucks but I still asked his mom if there's any particular toy that he likes. Wala naman daw, basta any toy vehicle will make the little boy happy.

To be honest, mahirap hanapan ng gift ang batang yun because he seem to have everything na naman.

Anyway, we were at Walmart last Monday (November 20) and I saw this Mack's Mobile Tool Center toy. It's actually big and heavy pero kasya sa balikbayan box. Hmmm, pwede. And believe me, kabisado ko lahat ng toys sa Walmart at Toys R Us kasi lagi kaming nandun.

The price was $79.97 (+ 9.59 tax = $89.57 / Php3,600.00 - final price) and it was ok.

We were at Walmart again yesterday and I showed it to Ford. He gave me the go signal to buy it. Saka baka may makita pa akong iba. Marami kasing new toy releases ngayon kasi nga magpapasko. Pero convinced na rin talaga ako na this is what I want to get for my nephew.

***********

But just tonight, we proceeded to Walmart again after a little black Friday shopping at Guildford Town Centre to buy a blanket for Nathan. Yeah, we are obviously Walmart people, we buy everything we need from Walmart lol.

As expected, the little boy geared us toward the toys section. Bumungad sa akin ito and I couldn't believe it at first. Kaloka, $39.97 na lang siya?!?! Bale $44.77 / Php1,800.00 with tax.

Grabe ang saya ko haha! Imagine saving 50% of what I already conditioned myself to shed off for the toy! Ok talaga dito pag nag-sale haha!

We instantly grabbed one and put it in our cart. Nagcontemplate pa nga ako kung bibilhan ko rin si Nathan, kasi nga sobrang mura na (it looks nicer and pricier in actual ha). But Nathan showed no interest on it eh. And when I told him that he will give it to Kuya Luc as a gift, he excitedly said yes. Walang inggit o question man lang kung bakit wala siya (he's a good boy and inasmuch as he loves receiving gifts, sanay din siyang magbigay kasi talagang tinuturan namin).

Ayan, problem solved na! I got what I wanted at a very reasonable price. Yung natipid ko, I might use na lang in buying other toys/clothes for Kuya Luc kasi nga ang dami-dami naming utang sa kanya. Or pwede kong ibigay ng cash kapag nagkita kami so he could buy what he wants pa.

*************

If there's one thing we learned about toy-buying here in Canada, it's TO WAIT.

On buying toys for Nathan

I've been reviewing our expenses for the past three months (I started making a list since July 1) and was shocked to realize that we've spent quite a lot on Nathan's toys. Around $300 na, hindi pa included yung mga happy meal toys and other educational materials.

At ang dami pa naming naka-line up na bilhin for his birthday and Christmas ha.

I honestly have no idea kung normal ba yun o we are going overboard na. How often should we buy new toys ba?

Now that Nathan is exposed with toy reviews in Youtube, ayun panay na ang request. And mind you, very expensive toys yun ha.

He's willing to wait. He's expecting us to gift him with a huge Paw Patrol Lookout on his birthday and an animal farm toy set for Christmas. Puwera pa yung requests niyang Peppa Pig House from Lola Lucy and "big" hotwheels from Grandpa. Tapos me batman ang spiderman pa na nadagdag, nakakaloka!

For Christmas, I am planning to wrap at least five toy gifts for him.

FORD: "Kaya pala maraming toys si Oliver (his cousin) noong bata. Tingnan mo mukha ng anak mo."

The challenge really is how to control ourselves from buying toys for him. I know that there are many other parents really who spoil their children, but Ford and I grew up in simple families kaya hindi kami sanay sa maraming toys.

Here are the reasons why we keep on buying toys:

  • Nathan has no other playmate. I need things to help me entertain him.
  • Nathan now appreciates toys. He knows na what he wants. Ford made a promise to him when he was a baby that he will buy him toys pag naglalaro na talaga siya (ayan tuloy, napasubo siya).
  • Toys are relatively cheaper here in Canada kumpara sa Pinas. I am a sucker for great deals, kapag nakakita talaga ako ng mura eh nanghihinayang akong hindi bilhin.
  • Because it's hard to say no to your child when you can afford naman yung pinapabili.

Siguro yung last reason ang talagang struggle.

When I was a kid, I got used to my mom's saying "no" whenever I would ask her to buy me a toy from the market (oo sa palengke na nga lang olats pa rin). Seriously.

So now that I have a son, ONLY SON mind you, syempre gusto kong malaro niya lahat ng gusto nyang laruin.

I am thankful though kasi nga hindi pa naman dumarating sa point na nagi-iiyak o nagwawala siya kapag ayaw naming bilhan ng toy (except for the toy vacuum when he was one year old kasi gustung-gusto niyang gayahin ang daddy niya kapag nagva-vacuum). Napapaliwanagan pa namin siya na hindi palaging pwedeng bumili ng toy agad agad and that he has to wait kung may gusto siya. So far, happy na siyang makapag-ikot-ikot lang sa Toys R Us or Disney Store.

Hope he maintains that attitude. I would like to believe that he has his dad's Ilocano blood, matiisiin at matipid haha, kasi pag nagkataon, mapupunta talaga sa kanya ang malaking bulk ng budget namin. #BadParenting, I know.

Happy Meal: Despicable Me 3

Yey, mission accomplished! We've completed the 12 Despicable Me 3 happy meal toys that are available here in McDonald's Canada!

As you can see, my boy is so happy! =)

Yep, I used the work "accomplished" because getting all these 12 toys is not an easy feat. I know that many would try, but very few would succeed lol!

June 23, 2017
You see, unlike in McDonald stores in the Philippines where they usually carry all or most of the toys at the same time, paisa-isa lang na design ang available dito. You cannot buy two different toys sa isang bilihan. So imagine kung 12 toys ang kailangan mong kumpletuhin, challenge talaga.

The best way to get all the toys is to look for them in different stores. On the first day of our minion-hunting, we had to go to Langley pa to get our second toy. Whew!

Minion toys are highly popular so we had to rush.

I had to print this out pala pala alam ng asawa ko kung ano pa ang kulang. Minsan kay inuutusan ko rin siyang mag-take out.

completed in 20 days

There came a point na umay na umay na ako sa chicken nuggets. My son doesn't eat nuggets nor burgers kaya ako naman talaga ang tagakain.

I admit din that I almost gave up. Down to the last minion, I thought: "Ano bang probability na mahanap ko pa yun?" Medyo tinamad na talaga ako. But I guess the heavens are on me. After going to Aberdeen Mall in Richmond to have dinner last week, we had to look for a McDonald's after because Nathan was asking for fries and orange juice.

Again, before buying, I asked a crew kung ano ang available nilang toy. The crew came back after a moment and apologetically said: "Sorry, this is the last minion that we have."

OMG! I wanted to shout right there and then. Iyon na lang ang kulang namin! "I'm getting it! I'm getting it!", I heard myself saying. I really couldn't believe my luck.

So here are my, este my son's minions. So kawaii noh? Sa totoo lang di naman ako nanonood ng Despicable Me pero naku-cute-an lang ako talaga sa kanila haha.

By the way, I've always been a fan of happy meal toys. Nagko-collect na ako dati pa, natigil lang syempre kasi mas naging 'serious' ako with life haha. But now that I have a son na nakaka-appreciate na ng toys, there's no reason para di ako bumalik sa pagbili =)

Isa pa, I am a #boredhousewife, remember? Kaya pagpasensyahan na please.

Random Chika # 8

1. Kidzoona in SM Marilao. OMG! As in OMG! Magkaka-Kidzoona na pala sa SM Marilao! I only learned about it last January 28 (Chinese New Year) kasi hindi ako nagagawi sa parteng iyon ng SM. I am so happy!

Grrr.

2.  Happy Chinese New Year! I urged my mother to buy this. Mahilig siya sa mga ganyan eh.

CES -- Mamoosh, kain naman tayo sa labas to celebrate Chinese New Year.
MAMOOSH -- Bakit, Chinese ka ba?
CES -- Hindi po. Pero lagi akong napagkakamalang Intsik! (Which is true!)

We ended up eating dinner at Chowking (plus Master Siomai!).

3. Jollibee Supermeal. I am glad Jollibee came up with this. Para sa mga katulad kong matakaw haha! Php125 only!

4.  Kiddie Meal Toy Set. I've completed this set in 3 days.

There was a time in my life when I collected ALL happy and kiddie meal toys that were released in the market. Hoarder lang ang peg. But I am happier now kasi may anak na akong makikinabang haha!

5. My cousin's funeral. Another first cousin of mine died last January 25. The last time I came home, may namatay din akong pinsan (November 2015). Both were in their 50s.

We had to drive to Hagonoy for the funeral. Konti lang ang nakipaglibing because it was too far.

We were all hungry after the libing so we dropped by Pat's Palabok House in Guiguinto before going home. There were 15 of us.

We had palabok and lugaw.

6.  Miss Universe in Pinas.

7.  Balatski's visit. Balatski and her two kids came over to our house for a few hours to visit me and Nathan. They were just here in the Philippines for a week kasi may kailangan silang lakarin.

Balat is like a sister to me and I've missed her so much! The last time we saw each other was in January 2013 pa.

Too bad we weren't able to make chika talaga because of our kids! Ang gugulo nila haha! Sana makapagkwentuhan na kami nang maayos next time.

Pic courtesy of Balatski (It was so hot that day kaya hulas na hulas ako huhu!)

8. Fruit and Nut Chocolate. I am a very boring chocolate-eater. I only eat those plain ones. Balatski never fails to bring me some pasalubong whenever she comes home (they're based in UAE).

9.  Jollibee at 12:30am. I am so thankful that we have a 24-Hour Jollibee and McDonald's nearby. May nakakainan ako kapag tulog na si TanTan hehe.

Sakto one night that I was so hungry, pauwi from work ang pinsan ko. Nalibre tuloy!

Thanks, MackyMacMac!

10. Ten-Peso Ride. I was so happy when I discovered this "ride" in SM Marilao (near the foodcourt).

My little boy was so happy the first time. Naka-two rides siya. Nung bumalik kami after a few days, di na siya ganun ka-happy.

Sayang. Akala ko nakatagpo na ako ng cheap entertainment for my son. Tsk.

Random Chika # 6

1. Hotwheels. Nathan's always been into "broom broom." Dugong Reyes nga yata talaga. Now that he's bigger, I'd start buying him metal match boxes na. Ok pala ang Hotwheels, made in Malaysia (at

2. Goldilocks Cake. We got invited to Tito Harold's "surprise" birthday party last October 7 (Friday). There's a Goldilocks branch in Guildford Mall so we went there to get a cake.

Their cakes are not similar to what are being sold in the Philippines.

There weren't much choices so I ended up choosing this round choco 'something' cake. It costs $23.25 -- not cheap considering na maliit lang siya. According to the friendly staff, it's a "thaw" cake. Kailangan palipasin ng one hour bago kainin.

They asked me if I want some flower decors for the cake. I was hesitant kasi nga panlalake. But they suggested a 'blue and yellow theme' so sige. Eto ang finished product.

There were many cakes in the party but I was happy kasi yung dala namin ang ginamit for the 'blowing of the cake.' Siguro kasi personalized, saka the guests wanted to taste na rin the cake.

In fairness, masarap siya. Even Ford (who's not into sweets) liked it. Sulit na rin.

Happy birthday, Tito Harold!

3.  Lakompake Book. This is the very first book na hahanapin/ bibilin ko sa Pinas pag-uwi ko next month. Sana may stock na by then kasi sa ngayon eh nagkakaubusan daw. Haha, tawang-tawa kasi ako talaga kay Senyora!

4. Food Trip sa Richmond Public Market. We regret buying combo meals at one of the food stalls in Richmond Public Market, hindi kasi ganun kasarap. Pero mura ha, $7.50 lang tatlong ulam na.

Pero the best talaga ang fried suid. $8.50 lang super dami na. Hay, I am craving for it now! Makabalik nga dun uli bukas.

5. Aling Mary's Kutsinta.

I wonder kung meron ba dito talaga na me gusto nito?

My husband tried to finish it kasi sayang, kaso di na talaga keri ng powers niya. Kaya ayan, tapon na ang tatlong piraso.

Nathan's Crib

I have yet to write a long post about my birthing story, but I still do not have the time and energy for a long post. I'll blog about it in the next days.

Anyway, I just want to show you our Nathan's crib. We have an extra room in the house but we did not put up a nursery. Our baby will be sleeping with us in our bedroom (of course) so he just have a "corner" instead of a whole nursery hehe.

We actually bought two cribs. One is this white wooden crib that can serve as our boy's bed na rin later (until he's about three years old) and the other is a Graco playpen that we placed in our living room (I'll show it to you later). Both were bought at Walmart.

I am happy to have found a colorful animal-printed bedding set in Walmart as well. I am not fond of "all blue" for the little boy eh. By the way, it has a terno crib mobile din but we didn't put it up yet.

I wanted to do something special for my baby Chicklet so I set up a welcoming party. We haven't really bought toys yet (we prioritized to shop for the baby essentials first), yan pa lang ang meron kami. The brown bear is Pod's actually (regalo ko sa kanya noong 2012 birthday niya).

I printed a small simple welcome banner, too. Sorry Nathan, Mommy has no budget for a grander welcome home surprise. But I did my best to make your first day at home a bit special.

Ooops, this is Niknok -- Chicklet's buddy. I bought it at Ikea (I got so fixated with this soft doll the moment I saw it) and I wish my baby gets to enjoy it soon. Who says only girls can play with dolls?

Niknok - derived from sinok or huccups (because Chicklet is so sinukin)
----------------------------------

We finally were able to bring Nathan home last November 17 (Monday). It was a very joyful occasion. Imagine, tatlo na kami sa bahay! A baby truly lightens up any dull house!

Though modest and simple, my baby Nathan seemed to enjoy his new crib and new home.

Welcome home, anak! We are so glad you're here. Your dad and I promise to give you a good home and a happy family life. We love you so much!

Hello Kitty Happy Meal

I was at West Edmonton Mall for almost the whole day last Friday (November 7). I went on my 10th weekly ultrasound at 10am and I asked the husband not to pick me up anymore during his lunch time. I wanted to walk and walk (my cervix is still closed) and do a bit of shopping hihi.

I had my lunch at T&T (as usual), shopped a little, and read a book while resting. At around 3:45pm, while lounging on the mall's couch, I saw a little girl carrying a McDonald's Happy Meal box. The box has a hello kitty print on it.

My heart palpitated, I am always like this whenever there's a hello kitty happy meal on the market. You see, I was (still am) a hello kitty addict. I have one room in our Philippine home that's filled with kitty (no kidding!).  There's really something about this sweet feline that makes me giddy.

And so I went to the foodcourt where there's a McDonald's to verify if they indeed have a hello kitty happy meal.

Upon confirming that they do, I had a three-minute self-deliberation:

Bibili ba ako? Haler, bawal sa akin ang fast food kasi may gestational diabetes ako.
Eh sayang naman, yan lang ang hello kitty souvenir mo para sa 40th birthday ni hello kitty.

I haven't eaten fast food since I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes so I was really hesitant. In the end, my love for hello kitty prevailed.

After paying $4.50 (tax included), or approximately Php180.00, I was one big happy girl carrying this!

The big cup was just water.
It was my first time to buy a happy meal here and I didn't know "how." Basically, you have to choose an entree pala (and that would determine the price), then the side, then the drink. Unlike in the Philippines, ginawa nilang "healthier" ang options dito, ni hindi nga rin pwede ang softdrinks (or pop as what they call it here).

I was also happy that they put everything on this box.

And the toy!

Too bad I wasn't able to choose the toy. They just asked me kung for boy or girl ang toy and that's it.

Buti na lang I got the one with a cake. Here's the complete set pala:

Picture taken from the internet (credits to the owner)

There are eight designs. Tsk, if only I can buy them all, just like what I always do in Pinas.

-----------------------

I remember, whenever I learn that hello kitty is featured on the happy meal, my Mamoosh and I would rush to McDonald's Bocaue or SM Marilao and we would buy all the designs at once! Haha, those were the days!

-------------------------

Happy meals do doubt will become part of my life here in Edmonton as I will soon have a child.
